Today we associate Tarot Cards with the mysteries of the occult. Originally, however, they were just another card game – similar to our modern-day bridge.
The origins of Tarot are unclear. Some people say they originated in China, whilst others argue that they were first used in Egypt. What we do know for sure, is that Tarot Cards were recorded in Europe in the early 15th century, mainly owned by wealthy families due to the high cost and time taken to produce a full deck. Back then there was no printing press so they were all painted by hand! Once the printing press was invented, Tarot Cards had a resurgence and were mass produced into the sorts of decks we see today.
There are many, many different decks in circulation now – the most well known deck being The Rider-Waite deck. In the three-card pull, the cards drawn represent the past, present and future. The Celtic Cross is more in depth and the cards change their meaning depending on where they are positioned.
